A-1 53167 ist der Codename, den Aníbal López (geboren 1964) seit 1997 nutzt um seine Aktionen zu signieren. International bekannt wurde A-1 53167 durch seine Teilnahme an der Biennale von Havanna (2000), der Biennale von Venedig (2001) - wo er zusammen mit Herrero, Sala, Pilson ausgezeichnet wurde - und der Biennale von Prag (2003), wie auch an Gruppenausstellungen wie "Attak" in der Kunsthalle Wien (2003) und "Todo Incluido" bei Conde Duque Madrid (2004). In Berlin wird A-1 53167 die neue Arbeit "Do It Right" präsentieren, die extra für diese Ausstellung angefertigt wurde. In A-1 53167 treffen die klar durchdachte Distanziertheit der Konzeptkünstler aus den sechziger Jahren mit der latenten Gefährdung lateinamerikanischer Guerrilleros aufeinander. A-1 53167 hat Guatemala City als den Ort für seine Arbeit gewählt und urbane Aktionen wie auch Interventionen als seine Methode bestimmt. Das hohe Niveau dieses Spiels zwischen Kunst und A-1 53167 bedeutet für ihn eine persönliche Gefahr auf den Strassen der Stadt. Wie könnten wir die extreme Geste von "EL Préstamo" (das Darlehen) vergessen, in dem ein mit einem Gewehr bewaffneter A-1 53167 einen Raubüberfall inszeniert und einen uneingeweihten Passanten angreift? Das gestohlene Geld sollte eine Ausstellung am "Contexto" finanzieren und so das Opfer zu einem Kunstförderer und die Zuschauer zu Mittätern machen. A-1 53167 gehört zu der politischen und politisierten Künstlergeneration, die die Netzwerke der Ökonomie und der Informationsvermittlung durchdringen und sich unnachgiebig in das Verhältnis zwischen den Realitäten und den Regelwerken, die unsere bürgerlichen Leben beherrschen und bestimmen, einmischen. Letztere finden sich in der Arbeit von A-1 53167 vorwiegend als linguistische Definitionen wieder, die der Künstler zumeist der Minimal Art und der Konzeptkunst entlehnt. Jede dieser Arbeiten ist eine Untersuchung des Beziehungsgeflechts zwischen den sozialen Realitäten und der Präzision einer Kodierungen von Kommunikation, Information und Recht, aus der Perspektive einer Kultur, die zwischen Staatstreich und organisiertem Verbrechen, zwischen ökonomischem Bankrott und dem durch den momentanen Neo-Liberalismus produzierten Elend balanciert. Die Ausstellung "Do It Right " versammelt eine Reihe von Videoarbeiten und Fotografien, die A-1 53167 in den letzten Jahren produzierte und die das Verhältnis zwischen Legalität und Illegalität, Subjektivität und Objektivität, Sicherheit und Terror als zentrales Thema haben. Die Videos "Una Tonelada de Libros" (2003) und "Liston de Plástico Schwarze" (2003), sowie die Fotografien der Serie "30 de Junio" (2000), zeugen von den Interventionen, die von A-1 53167 in öffentlichen Räumen Guatemalas gemacht wurden. Vor allem jedoch verweisen der Titel und das Bild, welche gewählt wurden, um die Ausstellung zu repräsentieren, auf die Regeln hinter einem Verbot, das A-1 53167 in seiner Aktion zur Ausstellungseröffnung thematisieren wird. Wie ein Zeremonienmeister legt er dabei Spielregeln fest: danach ist es am Publikum, diese zu befolgen und nach ihnen zu spielen. A singular blend where the clear-headed detachment of a 1960s-era conceptual artist meets the constitutionally at-risk existence of Latin guerrilleros, A-1 53167 has selected Guatemala City as home base for his work and urban actions and interventions as his modus operandi. The high level of play between art and A-1 53167 takes a personal risk on the streets. How could we forget the extreme gesture of "El Préstamo" (the Loan) where a gun-toting A-1 53167 stages an armed robbery by attacking an unwitting passer-by? The stolen money was to fund an exhibition at the "Contexto" space and thus turn the victim into sponsor and the spectator into an accomplice in the event. A-1 53167 belongs to that politically outspoken and concerned artistic generation that penetrates the economic and information world and relentlessly insinuates itself in the relationship between the evidence of facts and the rigor of the regulatory and analytic propositions that govern and discipline our civic lives. These latter are presented in the work of A-1 53167 as linguistic definitions that the artist draws chiefly from minimal and conceptual art. Each of his works is a verification of the relationship between social reality and the precision of codes of communication, information and legislation, from the perspective of a culture poised between the coup d'etat and organized crime, between economic insolvency and the current squalor produced by contemporary Neo-Liberalism. The exhibition "Do it Right" gathers together a series of videos and photographs produced by A-1 53167 in the past few years and featuring the relationship between legality and illegality, subjectivity and objectivity, security and terror as a central theme. The videos titled "Una tonelada de libros" (2003) and "Liston de plástico negro" (2003), together with the photographs from the "30 de junio" series (2000), witness the interventions made by A-1 53167 in Guatemala's public spaces. But, above all, the name and the image elected to represent the exhibition refer to the normative code that is behind the prohibition thematised in the action that A-1 53167 will stage at the opening of the show. Like a master of ceremonies, he will provide the rules of the game: then it will be up to the public to play.
