Alan Rath Run Man Run Haines Gallery will be hosting its fourth solo exhibition with electronic sculptor Alan Rath. "Run Man Run" will feature a new body of work produced over the last two years focusing on the image of a digitally generated running man. Alan Rath, an artist who studied engineering at MIT, has been central to the ever-developing dialogue of the role of new media in the arts. This recent body of work is the most electronically sophisticated to date. The computers Rath manufactures and places within handcrafted steel, glass and plastic armatures are capable of complex directives over time (some evolve over two decades) and are triggered by heat seeking sensors that activate the LCD screens. The "life force" in these machines is encapsulated and highly controlled with seeming aesthetic and mechanical ease. These formal, sleek and beautifully crafted sculptures are pared down to reflect a minimalist sensibility. From small-scale screens in jar-like sculptures to large screens encapsulated into plastic presentation cases this exhibition demonstrates Rath's range of materials and use of ever-evolving technologies. "Running Man II", the largest in this series, combines Rath's use of kinetic sculpture with the LCD screen. In this work the image of the running man rotates around a central axis creating a parallel between the movement of the image and the sculptural body. This exhibition will also feature one major new work incorporating multiple LCD screens with the image of the human eye entitled "Eyeris III". This exhibition will have an extended running length of eight weeks to give viewers the opportunity to come back more than once and experience these "living" sculptures as their programs progress and reveal new imagery and movements.
