Motion Pictures

Alan Rath's technical innovations in the field of digital media continue to expand the boundaries of our visual technological culture. Within the blurred line of art and science, Rath takes his place in the company of Eadweard Muybridge, Harold Edgerton and Bruce Nauman.

Rath's recent sculptures experiment with the traditional framed format by exploiting the tension between a static framework and a dynamic image - coupling multi-colored LCD screens with mats and frames. The relational aesthetics of these works begin to emerge instantly as the motion sensors fabricated in each piece awakens to the presence of visitors. This relationship with its viewer lends the work a sense of "interactivity" that is simultaneously comic and riveting.

Programmed with an internal calendar of up to fifty years, each work in the exhibition is capable of complex directives over time. In "Running Man Triptych" (2005), animated images of 3-D running man models are juxtaposed on various days throughout the year with an array of static images including historical paintings and sculpture, photographs and digital flowers. Other works in the exhibition hark back to earlier works that displayed linked still photographs of eyes and mouths such as "Framed Monocle" (2005).

Alan Rath's work is held in several major public and private collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Denver Art Museum, Cincinnati Art Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Hara Museum, Tokyo, Henry Art Gallery, Seattle, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
