Live Through This

Marvelli Gallery is pleased to present "Live Through This", the solo exhibition of American artist Alex McQuilkin. The exhibition will feature two new videos and a photographic suite.

In the video "Romeo & Juliet (I Wanna Be Claire Danes)", McQuilkin recreates the final scene of Baz Luhrmann's movie adaptation of Romeo and Juliet in which she acts the roles of both Romeo and Juliet. With a mixture of irony, seduction, and painful sincerity, she portrays the characters as isolated from each other. The relationship with the camera and the audience keep them from being completely alone. Each character has her moment of cinematic self-indulgent drama, then each one ends her life. In McQuilkin's words, the video confronts "the line between faith and despair, and the heartbreaking feeling of abandonment and hopelessness when you cross it."

The second video, "Desperado" - in which the artist lip-synchs to her own adaptation of the Eagles' song - continues her exploration of self-indulgent pain that is solidified by the viewer's attention.

Alex McQuilkin received her BFA from New York University in 2002. In the past few years, she has exhibited extensively in Europe: Berlin (Voelker & Freunde Galerie), Frankfurt (Galerie Adler), Copenhagen (Gimm Eiss), London (Ritter/Zamet), and Madrid, among other venues. Her videos were recently shown at the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid. Her work is also prominently featured in a recent book on the Olbricht Collection.
