Amy Rathbone
unbent

Installation and Drawings

Priska C. Juschka Fine Art is pleased to present "unbent", Amy Rathbone's first solo exhibition in New York City. In both her installations and drawings, Rathbone juxtaposes diverse forms, colors and materials for the creation of a self-contained and meditative space, imbued with intuitive playfulness and humor.

Stepping into one of Rathbone's installations is an experience similar to that of entering a foreign and uncanny land where the rules of engagement differ from those practiced on the anterior of the looking glass. This is a result of the impartial system Rathbone employs when she approaches the gallery space. Rather than performing a literal interpretation of the physical space, she becomes attune to the undertones that emanate from its surrounding environments. Wire, sandbags, spray paint, ink and gouache are employed to form a novel environment, which holds its own inner logic. Suspended in mid-air, protruding from walls, spilling out of corners, the different components that make up this foreign land attain a unique personality and context.

Rathbone's process is one of meticulous construction that occurs over an extended period of time. Each element of the work is painstakingly assembled from minuscule parts to form an immersive whole. Similarly, the viewers' experience unfolds following a comprehensive method of "absorption" of the space and the subtleties that permeate it. Rathbone applies vast spectrums of scale and weight, which helps balance and reveal the less apparent elements. The viewer is thus requested to seek out these underlying layers of form and meaning in order to construct a personal narrative that extends beyond the gallery walls.

Amy Rathbone was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and is now based in San Francisco, California. She holds a BFA from Ohio Wesleyan University and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has had several solo exhibitions nationally and internationally, including San Francisco, Davis, Chicago and Prague. She has also participated in numerous group shows in such cities as New York and Tokyo.
