André Thomkins Lackskins Galerie Hauser & Wirth is pleased to announce that we will represent the Estate of André Thomkins in collaboration with the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, Vaduz. André Thomkins (1930-1985), born in Lucerne/Switzerland is a typical "artists' artist" who was highly respected by artist friends such as Daniel Spoerri, Dieter Roth, George Brecht or Karl Gerstner. Preoccupied with Marcel Duchamp and influenced by the work and ideas of Paul Klee, André Thomkins was one of the pioneers to stimulate a new approach towards the two-dimensional image space in the 1960's. The work of André Thomkins is very versatile - technically brilliant, playful and humorous, enigmatic, ironic and profound and therefore it can not be assigned to any specific art category. His watercolours, pen- and pencil drawings, oil paintings and objects reflect an immense visual and intellectual knowledge. Apart from Switzerland the artist was living and working in Dusseldorf, later also in Munich and Berlin. He was also a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. André Thomkins developed new techniques, like for example his "Lackskin" works, where varnish was poured on water and then skimmed off. He also created his own categories (patterns) and iconography (Button Egg) and a whole series of textual figures like palindromes or anagrams. Important exhibitions were held during the artist's lifetime in The Netherlands and Germany and after his premature death in 1985, his comprehensive oeuvre was presented in a retrospective show in Ludwigshafen, Berlin and Lucerne in 1989/1990.
