Andy Denzler

Ruth Bachofner Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Swiss artist Andy Denzler, born in Zurich in 1965.

In his second solo exhibition at the gallery, Andy Denzler continues to "create tranquility for the senses in an urban world" through his abstract paintings. "The paintings," he says, "show texture, structure and surface-sensuousness, contrasting formal and concrete color-field painting without being distant from it."

Denzler constructs his paintings by dividing the canvas into various sized rectangles. Blocks and strips of color shift between calming monochrome fields to active quadrants full of texture while others fall somewhere in between. The gestural squares are typically black and white, full of layers and scrapes. Denzler pours and pulls wet on wet paint, blurring the colors together to create rich, sensuous mid tones.

His monochromatic blocks range from earthy umbers to his characteristic solid, bright orange and linden green. Hard geometry influenced by technology and the concrete of his surroundings meets softer, painterly textures in these pieces. The combination creates a series of forthright elegant abstractions.
