Andy Warhol
Piss & Sex Drawings and Paintings

Gagosian Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of Andy Warhol's Piss and Sex Parts paintings and male nude drawings from the 1950s to the late 1970s.

In Holland Cotter's review of the Andy Warhol Retrospective at MOCA Los Angeles, he writes that the subject of sex and Warhol's sexuality was not represented:

"You might not recognize the queer artist from "Andy Warhol Retrospective, a majestically installed career survey… So what is missing? Sex. Not eroticism – everything Warhol did feels erotic, but representations of actual sex, physical sex."
The New York Times, Sunday, July 14, 2002

This exhibition will address this omission with a group of works that include Warhol's rarely exhibited erotic male nude drawings from the 1950s, Torso and Sex Part paintings and drawings (1977-82), and the conceptual alchemy of the abstract Oxidation and Piss paintings series (1978). Many of the works in the exhibition are on view for the first time.

A fully illustrated catalogue, including an essay by Bruce Hainley, Contributing Editor of Artforum Magazine, will accompany the exhibition.
