Barry Stone
Your Name and Mine

Klaus Von Nichtssagend Gallery is pleased to announce the first New York solo exhibition for Barry Stone, a Brooklyn-based artist. The exhibition will feature seven large color photographs.

Barry Stone's photographs are taken with a traditional 6 x 7 medium format camera and printed conventionally in a darkroom. They are not digital, or digitally enhanced. The seven works that make up "Your Name and Mine" depict disparate subjects: a trampoline in a field, a boy snorkeling in the ocean, a women standing at the window, kids playing in the woods.

Although the photographs were made at different times and in a variety of places, they all have a similar aesthetic and together create a unified impression. The scenes in these photographs all document mundane moments which at first glance might seem familiar, like the outtakes from a family album. On closer examination, what seemed straightforward becomes increasingly complex: the kids in the woods are oddly posed, engaging in an exchange we can't quite put our finger on, the trampoline is out of place and brightly colored in the natural setting of a tree-lined field. Stone is documenting a familiar reality, but creating an image that is new and unknown, leading the viewer to multiple interpretations.

Barry Stone was born in Lubbock, Texas. He received a BA and MFA from University of Texas at Austin. He has shown recently in New York City and Texas.

Exhibition: January 7 - February 6, 2005
