 lampcluster 1, 2004 pigment inkjet print, 70 x 50 cm Bettina Buck Click for English text Bettina Buck hat letztes Jahr das Goldsmith's College in London absolviert und nahm dieses Jahr im Januar an einer Gruppenausstellung in meiner Galerie mit ausgesuchten Absolventen dieser Akademie teil. Bettina Buck kommt aus Köln (Jahrgang 1974) und hat an der Kunsthochschule für Medien bei Valie Export und Jürgen Klauke ihr erstes Diplom erhalten. Sie arbeitet raum- und projektbezogen. Bettina Buck lebt und arbeitet in London. Eine Hauptarbeit in ihrer ersten Einzelausstellung ist das Objekt "lampcluster". Ein dicht über dem Boden schwebendes, leuchtendes Objekt. Trotteln am Objekt vermitteln den Eindruck einer überdimensionalen Lampe, die jedoch ihrer traditionellen Aufgabe der Beleuchtung beraubt wird, da sie dicht über dem Boden schwebt. Sie leuchtet für sich selbst aus sich heraus. Fragen zur Funktions- und Wirkungsdefinition hinsichtlich des Skulpturenbegriffs werfen sich auf. Die Skulptur evoziert Erinnerungen an die Kindheit. Beim Betrachten entsteht eine geheimnisvolle Kombination aus Bedrohung und Geborgenheit. Durch die Kombination von Auftragsarbeit (Stahlgestell unter dem Lampenschirm) mit eigener Handarbeit (Schirm und Trotteln) kombiniert Buck traditionelle und konzeptuelle Arbeitsweisen. She and one other artist from Goldsmith's College are now represented the first time in germany by my gallery in Cologne. Bettina Buck comes from Cologne (born 1974) and graduated already at Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne in Valie Export's and Jürgen Klauke's class. Buck currently lives and works in London. The recent work of Bettina Buck inverts the rhetoric of power and authority invested in familiar everyday codes and signs. By inverting these signs through a range of techniques and materials whilst at the same time taking care to preserve the immediate familiarity and impact these signs have on us, Buck opens them up to a playful renegotiation in terms of their significance and validity. A major work in the show is titled "lampcluster". A luminous object that is floating tightly above the ground. Clots of the object provokes the impression of a big lamp that cannot fulfil his assignment to illuminate a room properly. It seems to shine for itself. The definition for a sculpture or object and its effect dithers. The sculpture evokes memories of everyone's childhood. Regarding the sculpture a mysterious combination of threat and safety attunes. The combination of job handling (steel frame beneath the lampshade) and her own handwork (lampshade and clots) is a significant attribute of her work in general. October 23 - December 11, 2004 |
