Bohnchang Koo
Portraits of Time

To study Korean photographer Bohnchang Koo's work is to take a meditative internal journey laced with subtle little pleasures. Pine needles delicately lie upon new-fallen snow. Fragile branches dance fancifully before a pure bright background. The whiteness of white becomes a thematic presence in his work. These minimal, simple, elegant, and peaceful images display a characteristic Korean sensibility based on a deep appreciation for the often-subtle nuances found in nature.

Koo grew up in the Buddhist culture of Korea, and received his college degree in Business Administration. But life as a Seoul businessman wasn't the fate that waited him, and he traveled to Germany to study photography at the Fach Hoch Schule in Hamburg. After returning to Korea in 1985, as a professor at the Kaywon School of Art and Design outside of Seoul, he started exhibiting his work in both Europe and America. He has since had eleven solo shows internationally.

It is with great pleasure that White Room Gallery presents Koo's recent series: "Portraits of Time". These exquisite prints show Koo's fascination with the fragile and fleeting nature of time and the impermanence of our temporal world. His keen vision shows us the beauty in the simple ordinary scenes we mostly overlook in our rush and bustle to live our lives. It is a reminder to slow down and look, with great attention, at the delicate beauty to be found in the fleeting creations of mother nature.
