 Sighting Unseen, 2004 Video installation Bull.Miletic Sighting Unseen Click for English text Bakgrunnen for videoinstallasjonen "Sighting Unseen" startet med at kunstnerfellesskapet Synne Bull og Dragan Miletic hadde sitt atelier i et område som tidligere hadde tilhørt forsvaret. Dette området er "The Golden Gate", som Golden Gate Bridge spenner over. Her oppdaget Bull.Miletic noen helt spesielle bunkere som blir referert til som Base-end stations, (basestasjoner). Disse ligger spredt over et stort område av "The Golden Gate", og var ment å beskytte The San Francisco Bay fra eventuelle fiender som måtte ankomme via sjøveien. De første Base-end stations dukket opp rundt 1908, og hadde som oppgave å regne ut koordinatene til fiendtlige skip og videreformidle denne informasjonen til batteriet. Stasjonene var integrert i landskapet, men ble forlatt i 1920-årene da fly og radar tok over. Nå er de nærmest arkeologiske konstruksjoner, og enkelte er nesten umulig å oppspore. Bull.Miletic, som i lengre periode hadde hatt sitt atelier i nærheten, gikk lenge rundt i dette området uten å legge merke til disse konstruksjonene - så godt skjult var de blitt av forfallet og naturens egne krefter. Bull.Miletic ble fascinert av historien til Base-end stations og den funksjonen de hadde i det militœre system - å observere. Soldatene satt i timevis og speidet gjennom en åpning formet som et filmatisk bredformat - et panorama. Videoverket Sighting Unseen gjenskaper denne ”utsikten”, utsnittet og bredformatet bidrar til å understreke den postapokalyptiske følelsen Bull.Miletic beskriver at de erfarte på stedet. The area in question is "The Golden Gate" under the famous bridge of the same name. Bull.Miletic discovered a number of special bunkers called base-end stations which are spread over a large part of The Golden Gate area and which were designed to protect San Franciso Bay from enemy attacks from the sea. The first base-end stations were built around 1908 and were assigned to calculating the geographical position of enemy ships and communicating this information to the coastal artillery. The stations blended with the landscape but were abandoned in the 1920s when aircraft and radar took over. They are now almost archaeological constructions, and some are almost impossible to find because of deterioration and the forces of nature. Indeed, Bull.Miletic had a studio nearby and frequented the area for a long period of time without noticing these constructions. Bull.Miletic were fascinated by the history of the base-end stations and the role they had played in the military system as points of observation. Soldiers sat in the bunkers for hours on end looking through an opening shaped like a wide-screen in the cinema. The video installation "Sighting Unseen" recreates this " view". The thin viewing slit and the wide format help to underline the post-apocalyptic feeling that Bull.Miletic experienced at the site.
