Fælles for værkerne er kunstnerens afdækning af og refleksioner over de spejlinger popmusikkens ikoner fremkalder hos publikum. "Working Class Hero" - John Lennon Video-installationen "Working Class Hero (A Portrait of John Lennon)", 2006 er en slags genopførelse af John Lennons første soloalbum "Plastic Ono Band" efter Lennons brud med The Beatles i 1970. Det fremføres i sin fulde længde - 39 minutter og 55 sekunder - i karaoke-form af 25 dedikerede Lennon-fans hentet fra England, Italien, Frankrig, Japan og USA. Med hver deres baggrund, indlevelse og oplevelse af deres ikon, synger de hans sange, mens de bliver filmet af kunstneren i et studie. Resultatet er et værk, der går under huden på fan-fænomenet og på beskueren - et menneskeligt og medmenneskeligt dokument, der afdækker, hvordan de emotionelle og fællesmenneskelige følelser, som kommunikeres ud i popkulturen, vækker en identifikations-trang. Værket består af 25 plasmaskærme (50 tommer), i Store Sal, der til lejligheden er totalt mørklagt og etableret som et studieagtigt rum. "Monuments" - ABBA, Grateful Dead, Iron Maiden og Britney Spears Fan-temaet viderebearbejdes i fire fotografiske værker med titlen "Monuments", 2007 som ligeledes er med på udstillingen: skulpturelle sammenstillinger eller en form for gruppefotos af fans til så forskellige pop-idoler som ABBA, Grateful Dead, Iron Maiden og Britney Spears. Ordet "monument" bringer tankerne hen på klassiske skulpturer i det offentlige rum - men i værkerne er begrebet nyfortolket af levende mennesker her og nu i en alternativ udformning. Dubleringen af ikonerne føjer både humor og socialitet og overraskende detaljering til de indstuderede manerer og velkendte attituder i de vidt forskellige subkulturer. Med en kritisk distance viser fotografierne i symbolske lag som påklædning, attituder og tegn, hvordan den enkelte indgår i en form for identitets-skabende gruppering. Værkerne - og Candice Breitz' kunst i det hele taget - er et bidrag og et modbillede til feticheringen af kunsten. Biografi Candice Breitz er født i 1972 i Johannesburg og bor og arbejder som kunstner i Berlin. Hun er siden 2007 professor ved Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. Kunstneren har tidligere udstillet værket "Mother + Father", 2005 på Louisiana som en del af udstillingen "Sip My Ocean" i 2006. Efterfølgende købte Louisiana værket, som altså nu indgår i samlingen. Common to the works is the artist's demonstration of and reflections on the way the general public mirrors itself in the icons of pop music. "Working Class Hero" - John Lennon The video installation "Working Class Hero (A Portrait of John Lennon)", 2006, is a kind of "remake" of John Lennon's first solo album "Plastic Ono Band" after Lennon's break with The Beatles in 1970. It is performed in its full length - 39 minutes and 55 seconds - in karaoke form by 25 dedicated Lennon fans from England, Italy, France, Japan and the USA. With their own different backgrounds, experiences and ways of perceiving and empathizing with their icon, they sing his songs while they are filmed by the artist in a studio. The result is a work that gets beneath the skin of the fan phenomenon and ourselves - a caring, human document that reveals how the shared emotions communicated by pop culture arouse an urge to identify not only in the individual but in all of us. The work consists of 25 plasma monitors (50-inch), is shown in the Louisiana's Hall Gallery, which has been totally darkened and set up as a studio-like space for the occasion. "Monuments" - ABBA, Grateful Dead, Iron Maiden and Britney Spears The theme of "fandom" is treated further in four photographic works entitled "Monuments", 2007, which are also in the exhibition: sculptural assemblages or a kind of group photos of fans of pop/rock idols as different as ABBA, Grateful Dead, Iron Maiden and Britney Spears. The word "monument" calls to mind classical sculptures in public space - but in the works the concept has been reinterpreted by living human beings here and now in an alternative version. The duplication of the icons brings humour, sociability and surprising detail to the rehearsed mannerisms and familiar attitudes in the widely different subcultures. With critical distance, the photographs show in symbolic layers like clothing, attitude and other signs how the individual enters into a kind of identity-creating grouping. The works - and Candice Breitz' art in general - are both a contribution and a counter-image to the fetishization of art. Biography Candice Breitz was born in 1972 in Johannesburg and lives and works as an artist in Berlin. Since 2007 she has also been a professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. The artist has previously exhibited the work "Mother + Father" (2005) at Louisiana as part of the exhibition "Sip My Ocean" in 2006. Louisiana subsequently bought the work, which is thus now part of the collection.
