Works on display are new digital paintings. "Each age finds its own technique" (Jackson Pollock). Claire Corey creates brightly coloured abstract digital paintings using a computer instead of traditional brushes. Rusty Freeman of The Plains Art Museum wrote "Corey builds upon the work of past artists and "revises, displaces, and recasts" the language of abstraction". Since 1995, Corey's work treads the line between the handmade and the tools of the machine. Utilizing common software programs, she cuts, pastes, alters, layers, and manipulates the unique marks she creates without using appropriated imagery, preferring to incorporate computer error patterns to create a new abstraction. Corey's work celebrates unpredictability. By using technology to explore the dynamism in painting Corey challenges the visual and philosophical value of paintings as well as the perceived flatness through her use of delicate deep fields of colour, dynamic movement and perspective illusion. Corey's work celebrates our modern technology and the history of traditional painting to create a new direction in art. Claire Corey works and lives in New York, USA. She participated in the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Space Program in 1999, was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 2000 and the 2001 Trustee's Award for an Emerging Artist by The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Connecticut, USA. She has extensively exhibited in the United States and Europe. This is her first solo exhibition in the Netherlands; all works on view were created in 2004 and 2005.
