Claire Hooper

Hooper gathers her material and inspiration from a wide range of sources including soap operas, life style magazines, films, cultural theory, philosophy and novels. Using structures of narrating, Hooper's works play with cultural codes and signifiers that are written and then erased in wave like movements.

In "Cerith Outside the Blitz 1980" (2005) Hooper presents us with a watercolour triptych based on a photograph by Derick Ridgers. The work appears as if it is a sequence of frames from a movie. In each image we see the same portrait re-painted, giving the effect of a slightly altered facial expression.

"Auditorium" (2005) is a video that was made in a museum lecture theatre in Dunkerque, France. The work takes as its starting point the interior decor of the auditorium - it's sticky chocolate quality becomes a place where a sexual fantasy is played out in a dream-like manner. The clicking sound of a slide projector falls into step with the change in frames which de-stabilises the perceived continuity of the narrative.

Hooper's newest work "World of Interiors" (2006) is a study of the magazine of the same name. In the manner of impressionistic novels of the 19th century, the "interior world" of the narrator in this video is played out visually across the pages of the magazine. The objects and spaces presented illustrate or prompt the psychological state of the narrator.

Claire Hooper lives and works in London. Recent projects include the publication "Victim" (pub. September 2005), "Les Merveilles du Monde", Monde group show, Musée des Beaux Arts de la Ville de Dunkerque, Dunkerque (July 2005), "Lore", Lore group show, Glasgow Project Room, Glasgow (July 2005), "No, it wasn't so much about dressing up as falling apart... apart", in collaboration with Jacob Dahl Jurgensen, Rachmaninoff's, London (March 2005).
