Clayton Brothers
Patient

F2 Gallery, Beijing is proud to announce the opening of the Clayton Brothers' debut solo exhibition in China, entitled "Patient".

After the indelible statements made by their work at Art Basel (Miami), The Armory Show (New York) and the upcoming Saatchi Gallery (London) "Triumph of Painting", and acclaimed group and solo exhibitions in the United States and Europe, Los Angeles based artists Rob and Christian Clayton continue to explore the human condition in their new body of paintings and works on paper.

Rob and Christian work together on each painting, collaborating intuitively, and allowing the imagery to unfold in an individual process, as their two minds meet, separate and connect again within their creative approach and process. Alternately marking, depicting and editing each surface, the Claytons deliberately distinguish themselves with their individual choices of subject, content and color. Weaving together threads of memory and perception, a tableau emerges, creating a unique visual language shared by both artists and viewers.

In "Patient", Rob and Christian turn away from the exterior world we inhabit, and focus inwardly on the working of the physical body. A variety of human symptoms are presented, ranging from mild Cyber-chondria to extreme euphoria countered by dysphoria. They confront the viewer with appendages, organs, symptoms and illnesses; and employ patients and fruits to articulate the fragility of life. At the same time, ideas surrounding the abandoned trust in our bodies' natural internal capacity of mending, in favor of external medical intervention, are investigated and challenged. The saturated pungency of the Clayton's pigments and their vivid compositional style inject the work with a sense of harmony amidst chaos. Relying less on a narrative-driven approach, Patient exhibits a shift in the Clayton's vision towards a more metaphoric and less linear vocabulary.

Rob and Christian Clayton grew up in Colorado, graduated from Art Center College of Design, California. They currently live and work in Los Angeles, and teach at Art Center College of Design.

This exhibition is being presented in collaboration with DF2 Gallery, Los Angeles.
