Cynthia Daignault

Plane Space is delighted to present Cynthia Daignault's first solo exhibition in New York.

Cynthia Daignault's latest paintings have an element of whimsy coupled with a new approach to seeking out, pictorially, alternative art histories. Through two series of paintings - institutional and domestic - art scholarship is skewed and posited in paint, bridging the duality that exists between art and art history. On a self-indulgent level, the paintings scratch the artist's itch to arrange known (often times personal favorite) works in unconventional settings. Daignault sees these wishes through in her paintings, curating works together in a museum gallery setting against convention - the projecting a Goya within a Nauman installation, for example. Or in the case of a domestic interior, suddenly, under Daignault's playful fulfillment, a Nauman TV cart is relocated to an average looking middle-America living room, only to look like it should be there. The paintings contextualize works of art in novel ways, democratizing the narrative that surrounds these otherwise iconic pieces by celebrated artists.

Cynthia Daignault lives and works in Brooklyn. Prior to moving to New York, she received her Post Baccalaureate degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her B.A. in Fine Arts at Stanford University. In addition to participating in two group exhibitions at Plane Space, Daignault has exhibited her work in Chicago and California.
