Dana Melamed
When Dawn Breaks

Priska C. Juschka Fine Art is pleased to present "When Dawn Breaks", Dana Melamed's first solo exhibition in New York City. In her work, Melamed amasses numerous layers of urban images and building materials in order to construct cities that exemplify the unremitting destruction and rebuilding of our surroundings. Melamed's works embody narratives of the great cities of the world, yet, at the same time, resist the allusion to a specific time and place.

Despite their seemingly open-ended appearance, Melamed defines a clear core around which the work organically develops on the wall. The starting point of her constructions are most often the very events that restructure our environments-fires, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes or acts of human aggression. These calamitous episodes leave a scar on the configuration of the city, in turn creating the need to rewrite its structural pattern.

It is this process of reconstruction that Melamed mimics in her work, both uncovering and concealing the impressions that the destructive force left behind. In so doing, her works unearth the intrinsic structure upon which every major city is built. She constructs buildings, paves roads and establishes infrastructures above existing ones, using architectural imagery and techniques such as transparency film, aluminum, ink, sheetrock mesh, and charcoal. By vigorously applying and eradicating layer after layer to and from her fictitious metropolis, Melamed points to the ubiquitous nature of history. In realizing the process and outcome of her works, one is able to distinguish a unique practice of regeneration that is inevitably inherent in the event of destruction.

Dana Melamed was born and raised in Israel, and now lives in New Jersey. She holds a B.A. in Architectural Studies from Ort Technikum, Israel. She has had several solo exhibitions in Tel-Aviv, and has also participated in group shows in the United States, including "New Found Land" at Priska C. Juschka Fine Art (2005). She recently took part in The Cooper Union Residency program (2005).
