Danny Rolph
There is no such thing as pure

Hales Gallery is pleased to present "There is no such thing as pure", a solo show by British painter Danny Rolph.

The title refers to the pollutant and rogue elements that Rolph uses in his paintings as an attempt to disrupt the picture plane. In this way, his paintings could be seen as a celebration of imperfection.

The painting is irrefutably the primary vehicle for Rolph's expression. He is intuitive with both his materials and composition. Through this improvised approach inspiration is drawn from his many interests whether consciously or not, visual or otherwise, to form poetic abstract paintings, each consisting of a combination of imagery and explosive energy.

For Rolph all visual material is fair game for painting, so in a shallow picture plane he crams in as much information as is possible, weaving diverse visual languages into some kind of wholeness. Hard angular structures jostle with pools of delicate colour. Collaged elements are bound into the whole with sinuous inky brush strokes. The supports for Rolph's paintings change too; sometimes he opts for a conventional canvas, on other occasions for stacked twinwall plastic boards where he works the paint on all six available surfaces before the sheets are put together.

Rolph's newest works painted over a period in 2005-2006 incorporate a series of angular forms over soft stained surfaces. The interlocking elements combined with mellow pastel colours suggest demolished buildings reminiscent of the buildings from warmer climes.

Danny Rolph lives and works in London. He studied MA painting at the Royal College of Art, London (1991-93) He was awarded the Delfina Trust Award (1998) and the Abbey Scholar, British School in Rome, Italy (1998). Rolph has recently had solo shows at A.R Contemporary, Milan, (2005), Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall (2005) and Chapter, Cardiff (2002). His work has also been included in group shows around the world including "Hinterland", Barbara Davis Gallery, Houston, USA (2006), "Cold Climate", Living Arts Museum, Reykjavik, Iceland (2006) and "Collage", Bloomberg Gallery, London (2004).
