Head (Severed and Burnt with a Blow Torch), 2002 gouache on paper David Mackintosh You Are Not Me Following his recent solo show at Arnolfini, hammer sidi is pleased to present "You Are Not Me", an exhibition of new drawings and sculpture. Influenced by his fascination with the human capacity for hatred, Mackintosh creates work that can feel familiar yet simultaneously unsettling. The drawings are created quickly in long sessions in which hundreds are produced but the majority are discarded. At each session Mackintosh empties his mind of any pre-conceived notions and ideas to produce these stream-of-consciousness drawings. "Mackintosh believes this method allows him to access subconscious imagery that society often attempts to repress... Mackintosh's drawings reflect a bleak view of the world, where the machinery of war and violent scenes mix with everyday situations from urban life; brooding fiends sit next to melancholy clowns; and the natural world is over-written with misanthropic slogans"... (Simon Morrissey, 2003) In addition to a series of drawings the exhibition also includes a number of large-scale marquetry pieces where Mackintosh has transformed some of his images onto plywood panels. David Mackintosh's work has been included in "Crash" (Polemics) at the Institute of Contemporary Art (1999), "Recognition" (solo show) at "Arnolfini" (2003) and "Purgatory and Hell" (solo show) at International 3, Manchester and Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art (2003). 24 September - 11 October 2003 Hours: Wed-Sat 12am - 6pm Hammer Sidi Gallery 53 Fashion Street UK-London E1 6PX Telephone +44 020.7377 2137 Fax +44 020.7377 9319 E-Mail info@hammersidi.com www.hammersidi.com |
