Babies, 2005 Ink on paper, 14 1/3 x 10 1/3 inches Courtesy Anton Kern Gallery, New York David Shrigley Back room gallery Ellen Berkenblit Anton Kern Gallery is pleased to announce the second solo show of Glasgow-based artist David Shrigley. Witty, prolific and darkly humorous, Shrigley's work pinpoints moments in a disjointed stream of consciousness and reveals an offbeat world. Eccentric moral dilemmas must be faced at every turn. Every situation is simultaneously bizarre and vaguely familiar. Unusual habits, dreams, facial features, school playgrounds and bodily functions are all fair game. In this exhibition, Shrigley presents a broad range of new works including a floor-based bronze sculpture, a series of black and white photographs with handwritten text, and a large number of drawings. In these works, the artist furthers his exploratory unraveling of the world around him in a language equally infused by hard-core conceptual art (with its instructions, lists and diagrams), Warholian dryness, and the liberating power of a good laugh. David Shrigley has exhibited widely around the world. Recent solo exhibition have been held at Kunsthaus Zurich, Switzerland (2003), Camden Arts Center, London (2002), and UCLA Hammer Museum in Los Angeles (2002). Recent group shows include "State of Play" at the Serpentine Gallery, London, "Emotion Eins" at the Kunstverein Frankfurt (both 2004), and "Splat, Boom, Pow! The Influence of Cartoons in Contemporary Art", Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston (2003). Shrigley has published over 25 books, the most recent one entitled "Kill Your Pets". New York artist Ellen Berkenblit will show a group of new paintings in the back room gallery. All works originated during her 2004 Art Production Fund residency at Claude Monet's estate and gardens in the small French town of Giverny. Berkenblit, ever so New York, however, seemed more taken by the experience of traffic in the French country side, the traffic signals and road signs around her, thus acclimating to a pastoral landscape charged with impressionist attitude. In an ironic and unexpected twist, her new work has become more hard edge, layered, bold and abstract. Berkenblit's work has recently been featured in the exhibitions "East Village" at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, NY (through March 19), and "Paint on Metal" at the Tucson Museum of Art (through May 1).
