The art of cruising, along with the codes that went with it, is now a lost form - activities that form a part of the past of queer existence in the world. Cruising is now well contained in spaces that are safe and expected – typically in front of ones computer. The occasional cruising spots exist only in a select few bars where it is well contained and rarely continues onto the streets, the parks and the other public places where men would express their various desires. The codes and signals that men were forced to use by a puritanical society, are a sign of the past, the pre-mainstream gay days. The "sexual outlaw" is no longer…


Dean Sameshima's latest body of work continues his ongoing exploration into topics that stem form his personal experiences, his current state.


Dean Sameshima (b. 1971, lives/works in Los Angeles) earned his MFA from Art Center College of Design (2000), and his BFA from the California Institute of the Arts (1997). Sameshima's work has been exhibited at the Pasadena Museum of Art (2002), Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles (2002), Kunstverein Hamburg, Germany (2002), Kunstraum Innsbruck, Austria (2002), and the Bard Center for Curatorial Studies, New York (2000) among other venues. His work was also recently published in CREAM 3 (Phaidon Press), and has also been reproduced and reviewed in Arttext, ArtForum, The New York Times, Camera Austria, the Los Angeles Times and Honcho. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
