Founded as "Sauce", an artist collaborative exhibition space in 1992, this venue at 173A N. 3rd in Williamsburg, Brooklyn has shown hundreds of artists during seminal periods in their developing artistic careers. Artists such as Roxy Paine, Rico Gatson, Laura Parnes, Carl Fudge and Seong Chun were in some of their first shows here. Known for its crowded openings and adventurous group exhibitions by then emerging artists from the neighborhood, "Sauce" along with "Minor Injury", "Brand Name Damages", "Test Site" and "Four Walls" was a precursor to the more developed art scene that has since transpired in Williamsburg. Originally founded by and for artists, the viewer demographic has changed along with the radically developing and newly gentrified neighborhood. A pivotal moment in the history of the Williamsburg art scene came with the advent of the "Other Rooms" exhibition at Ronald Feldman Gallery in 1995. This exhibition featured artists from "Sauce" along with "Momenta Art", "Four Walls" and "Pierogi 2000", bringing Williamsburg to the attention of a wider art viewing audience for the first time. Renamed "Feed" in 1997 the gallery, run by Lisa Schroeder, a founding member of "Sauce" and Barry Hylton, went on to showcase work by Eric Heist, Susan Graham and James Cullinane. A new incarnation in 2000 found the space dubbed "Arena@Feed" and continued its trajectory in 2001 when Sara Jo Romero, former director of Holly Solomon, joined Lisa Schroeder to form Schroeder Romero. The gallery, now primarily focused on exhibiting solo shows by both emerging and mid-career artists has featured artists such as Robert Boyd, Marsha Pels, Peter Hendrick and Lynn Cazabon. Schroeder Romero has been widely reviewed in publications such as The New York Times, Sculpture Magazine, Art News, TimeOut New York and Art Monthly. Along with works by the artists listed, "Decade" will also feature never before seen documentation from the previous 10 year history, offering a historical perspective on a rapidly changing community.
