Dieses Ausstellungsprojekt ist in vielerlei Hinsicht von höchstem Rang und Interesse: Mit Donald Judd steht ein international anerkannter Künstler im Zentrum, der die Entwicklung dreidimensionaler Kunst in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts sowohl visuell als auch konzeptuell massgeblich bestimmt hat. Waren in Europa zuletzt dem Frühwerk, den von Judd entworfenen Möbeln sowie dem druckgrafischen Werk Einzelausstellungen gewidmet, so wird mit dieser Präsentation von 40 hochrangigen Leihgaben erstmals ein retrospektiver Überblick über Judds Arbeitsprozess der Jahre 1961 bis 1993 ermöglicht. Die Ausstellung spannt einen weiten Bogen von den frühen Gemälden und den handgefertigten Werken über die "spezifischen Objekte", die kubischen Boden- und Wandarbeiten aus industriellen Materialien bis zu den gestapelten und gereihten Werken aus verschraubtem Stahl. Sie macht das komplexe Zusammenspiel von Volumen, Material, Farbe und Licht anschaulich, das Judds Werken die Wirkung von grosser Subtilität, Eleganz und Schönheit verleiht. Als Kuratoren fungieren Sir Nicholas Serota, Direktor der Tate Gallery, London, sowie Marianne Stockebrand, Direktorin der Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas. Die Ausstellung entsteht in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den Judd and Chinati Foundations. This exhibition project is of exceptional significance and interest for many different reasons: Donald Judd is an artist of international renown who had a considerable influence on both the visual and conceptual development of three-dimensional art during the second half of the 20th century. Whereas solo exhibitions in Europe have focussed of late on the artist's early works - the furniture designed by Judd and his art printing, this presentation will provide a retrospective overview of Judd's working process during the period of time between 1961 and 1993 with 40 high-calibre works on loan. The exhibition spans a broad spectrum, from the early paintings and hand-made works, the "Specific Objects", the cube-shaped floor- and wall-mounted works made of industrial materials to the stacked and aligned works made of screwed steel. It illustrates the complex interplay of volumes, materials, colours and light that lends Judd's works their great subtlety, elegance and beauty. The exhibition is curated by Sir Nicholas Serota, Director of the Tate Gallery, London, and Marianne Stockebrand, Director of the Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas.
