 AB-Q #1, 2006 acrylic on canvas; 60 x 48 inches Ed Moses New Paintings Veteran abstract painter Ed Moses opens an exhibition of new paintings at Brian Gross Fine Art. Moses' seventh exhibition with Brian Gross Fine Art will feature his recent series of large-scale paintings, as well as the stunning results of his foray into a medium previously unexplored, tapestries. Moses, a fixture of the Los Angeles art world, is renowned for his heroic gestural abstractions. In this new body of work, the artist investigates the dialectic of light and darkness in a manner reminiscent of Velasquez and the painters of the Hudson River School. In the painting "AYOG", black, silvery grays and metallic copper are applied in broad, assertive brushstrokes, creating tempestuous formations seemingly airborne in their dynamic interplay. The mood conveyed is that of atmospheric tension, a great Thomas Cole landscape before the storm. In these grand new explorations Moses succeeds in evoking the sublime. The tapestry project, published by Magnolia Editions, affords Moses an exciting new medium for his painterly vision. The artist's creations are captured in a digital "weave file" using custom calibrated color palettes and translated into a double-headed Jaquard loom with 17,800 available warp threads. This unique process allows for an unprecedented density of tone and texture. In "Crema De La", gold and silver metallic threads were used to create a sequence of hundreds of colors for a singular, luminous effect. Ed Moses was born in Long Beach, CA, in 1926 and received his BA and MA from the University of California, Los Angeles. His career began in the legendary Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles in 1958; in the same year he exhibited at the Dilexi Gallery in San Francisco. In 1996, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles presented a full-scale retrospective of his career. His work is included in the public collections of the Art Institute of Chicago; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Menil Foundation, Houston; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Philadelphia Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among others.
