Haunch of Venison präsentiert nebst späteren Arbeiten der beiden Künstler auch neue Wackelbilder (Lenticularbilder) von Nancy Kienholz. Seit den späten 50er Jahren produzierte Ed Kienholz unzählige Installationen und konzeptuelle Arbeiten, bevor die neuere Kunstgeschichte überhaupt die Begriffe Konzeptkunst und Installation definierte. Nachdem Ed in den frühen 70er Jahren Nancy traf, verfügte er für alle Arbeiten seit 1972 gemeinsame Autorschaft. Bis zu seinem Tode im Jahr 1994 arbeiteten Ed und Nancy Kienholz gemeinsam an Skulpturen und Installationen. Bezeichnend für die Arbeiten von Ed und Nancy Kienholz ist die Symbiose von Kunst und Leben und die Aufhebung von "high" und "low"; ihre aufwändige Suche nach Objekten und Materialien für ihre Arbeiten ist Ausdruck ihres gelebten Kunstverständnisses. Die Arbeiten von Ed und Nancy Kienholz hatten weitreichenden Einfluss auf die kommenden Generationen bildender Künstler; nicht zuletzt auch auf die installativen Arbeiten der Young British Artists, die einen betont schlampigen Briccolage-Charakter evozieren. Im grossen Galerieraum im Erdgeschoss ist die grossformatige Installation "76 J.C.s Led the Big Charade" aus den Jahren 1993-1994, ausgestellt. Die religiös inspirierte Arbeit, die 76 populäre Kruzifixe mit Bildnissen Jesu Christi umfasst, ist aus kreuzförmigen Deichseln gefertigt. In einem weiterem Raum sind rund ein Dutzend "concept tableaux" von Ed Kienholz aus den 60er Jahren präsentiert . Die "concept tableaux" können als manifestierte Ideen gelesen werden: Die Messingplatten mit den eingravierten Werktiteln sind zusammen mit der Beschreibung der zu entstehenden Arbeit das erste Stadium der Materialisierung des Werkes. Ausserdem sind in der Ausstellung neuste Arbeiten von Nancy Kienholz zu sehen. In den grossformatigen Lenticularbildern erzeugt die Überlagerung von religiösen und mondänen Motiven eine provokante Irritation. Zur Ausstellung erscheint eine neue Publikation, welche die Installation "76 J.C.s Led the Big Charade" prominent vorstellt (Text von Jessica Lack). From the late 1950s, Ed Kienholz started to produce numerous installations before they became a feature of contemporary art, and conceptual works before the term became a movement. After meeting Nancy in the early 70s, Ed made a statement that all works from 1972 onwards would bear the signature of both artists, and they worked on numerous sculptures and installations until 1994, the year of Ed's death. No line existed between life and art for the Kienholz's and they spent their time foraging for materials and objects through which they could express themselves, with a disregard for the division between "high" and "low" art. Ed and Nancy Kienholz have had a huge influence on future generations of artists, and their work can be read in relation to much of the theatricality and grubby hand-made seediness of the YBA installation artists. The exhibition will include the installation "76 J.C.s Led the Big Charade", 1993-94, a religion-inspired wall installation-work comprising of 76 popular images of Jesus Christ, all mounted on cross-shaped wagon tongues. The exhibition will also include several large-scale lenticular works - a printed image that switches between two images as the viewing angle changes - produced in the last 12 months by Nancy Reddin Kienholz. The works switch between varied provocative images such as Christ on the cross and Father Christmas to ten-pin bowls to women wearing burqas. The exhibition will be accompanied by a new publication focusing on "76 J.C.s Led the Big Charade", 1993-94, with a text from writer Jessica Lack.
