"The camera is, in a sense, both a way to get close, and to break free. It is a testimony to independence as well as a new way to relate to the world." (Elinor Carucci) Carucci's intimate color photographs chronicle her life with her husband, mother and father, brother, grandparents and cousins. These intimate portraits in everyday domestic environments are at the same time, intensely personal and universal. Her work has been published in several books, "Sleep" by Rizzoli, "MaleFamale" by Aperture, "Love and Desire" and "Nerve-The New Nude" both by Chronicle. "Closer", a monograph of her photographs, was published in May 2002 by Chronicle Books. She was chosen by Photo District News as one of its "Thirty under 30 Young Photographers to Watch" in 2000. Elinor Carucci was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2002 and won the International Center of Photography's Infinity Award for best young photographer in 2001. Carucci's photographs are in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the International Center of Photography, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others. Selfridges, the famous department store, will be showing commissioned photographs by Carucci in London and Manchester for their month-long spectacle "Body Craze", a project that sets out to expose our fascination with the human body in all its rich and rare diversity.
