Elisa Sighicelli

"My photographs of candles are almost a literal example of adding a temporal dimension to the photograph. The electric light is placed behind the depicted flame and it depicts the time passing and the candle consuming, but it is always the same instant." (Elisa Sighicelli)

Gagosian Gallery London is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Elisa Sighicelli.

Based in London and Turin, Italy Elisa Sighicelli constructs photographic light boxes in which she plays with the manipulation of light. Masking out areas with paint applied to the reverse of the image and backlighting other areas, Sighicelli subtly changes our perception of the images captured through her lens.

The Namibian desert, the Mexican landscape and the Carlo Mollino designed Turin Opera house constitute a few of the various settings photographed by Sighicelli. The ubiquity of light sources in Sighicelli's series of photographs is the unifying element that functions to unite these diverse geographical locations. Be it the glow of a candle, the light of a chandelier, or an image of the glowing sun, the nature of light and its effect on the image and the viewer are a central component of Sighicelli’s photographic endeavour.

Since receiving her MA from the Slade School of Fine Art in London, Elisa Sighicelli has exhibited her work in a wide variety of public institutions such as the Fondation Pour l'Art Contemporain Claudine and Jean-Marc Salomon in France, the Centro Gallego de Arte Contemporánea, in Galicia, Spain, the Hertzliya Museum in Tel Aviv and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. The artist has participated as well in various solo and group exhibitions in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris and Turin.
