Ella Gibbs presents:
Spare Time Job Centre

For six weeks in early 2003, Chisenhale Gallery will be transformed into a fully functioning employment agency, one that caters only for spare time positions. Ella Gibbs' project is a new commission for Chisenhale and is based on a standard job centre, inserted into the gallery's ex-factory space.

Visitors to Spare Time Job Centre are invited to seek Spare Time advice, browse the Spare Time Resource, look for Spare Time Tips and chat to the Spare Time Team. Applicants can then create their own unique Spare Time job opportunity, and apply for a position, all under one roof.

Spare Time Job Centre explores the boundaries of art and the community. The project provides a platform for a range of activities, from spontaneous communication to archiving - activities that are central to Gibbs practice, but which are also vital forms of contemporary culture. Crucially, the project's outcome will be determined by the input of Spare Time Job Centre's participants, rather than being a creation of the artist's singular, isolated vision.

Ella Gibbs combines a collaborative and curatorial approach in her work, thriving on the unpredictability of process. Gibbs' recent projects include: Fish Island: The Making of a Radio Show (broadcast radio project commissioned by Space Studios, 2002); Programme (commissioned by Whitechapel Art Gallery for Temporary Accommodation, 2001); Night Stop Cinema (5 day project in the River Lea valley commissioned by London Musicians' Collective, 2001). Gibbs recently took part in an Arts Council of England International Fellowship.
