Eric Brown

Goff + Rosenthal Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition of new sculpture by Eric Brown. Born in 1969 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Brown received his MFA at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He currently lives and works in New York City.

The sculptural work of Eric Brown seems, at first, precarious. A wall, warped in the middle, seems poised to topple; a nearly six-foot tower reveals its imperfect architecture in every layer and leans toward or away from the viewer, depending on one's perspective. The sculpture, despite the pure white palette and cool abstract forms, seems strangely vulnerable.

On closer inspection, these beautiful white towers and walls are not fragile at all - they are rooted in the sheer weight of layers of cast plaster. And the imprecise nature of their abstraction begins to dissolve, revealing basic architectural forms like bridges, overpasses, crossroads and airport terminals; places of intersection and connection.

Brown's combination of stripped-down architecture and a sophisticated Minimalist vocabulary makes his work something beyond purely abstract or representational. The weighty material stands in contrast to the impression of lightness given by shape and color. In fact, Brown's sculpture seems to inhabit the notion of "intersection" - an either/or of lightness and weight, stability and uncertainty, and of abstraction and representation.

"Although I use architectural forms to maintain a sense of order," says Brown, "I use materials that have their own inherent properties that soften the hard-edge nature of these forms and open up possibilities for the unexpected".

Eric Brown was recently featured in a group show at Triple Candie and the Dumbo Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY. His work is in the permanent collection of the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN.
