Solitudo, 2001-2004 PVA glue, plastic and acrylic, 360 pages, overall 105 x 56 x 43 cm Eugenio Ferretti Poiesis Faggionato Fine Art is delighted to announce their exhibition of recent work by Eugenio Ferretti. Using words - "Solitudo", "Mors", "Life" and "Poiesis" - Ferretti produces sculptural forms that focus attention on the multiple layers of meaning bound up with each word. Carefully chosen for their universal significance and relevance, these words are presented in Italian, Latin or English, emphasising the idea that the shapes and forms of the text are as important as the definition/meaning. In an image-saturated world these works offer the viewer an opportunity to have a more intellectual encounter with the written word. In "Life", twelve panels make up the whole. Each panel explores a different way of presenting the word; text variations range from the invisible to the very obvious. In these strange scientific compositions "life" fades in and out of focus, as a visual metaphor for the word it represents. This sense of illustrating the word is confirmed in "Mors" where the tight, unchanging arrangement is intended to reflect the certitude of everyone's fate. In "Solitudo", Ferretti has erased hundreds of pages of Letraset, creating a letter-less "book". Piled high, the characterless sheets exist as the aftermath of a painstaking process challenging the viewer's perception of what constitutes a book. Using only strong industrial materials (car varnish, iron, plastic, PVA glue, blunt carving tools) Ferretti transforms these non-art materials into noble, beautiful, waxy objects through a laborious creative process. Born in 1951 in Naples (Italy), Eugenio Ferretti lives and works in Milan. He has shown extensively in Italy.
