 Frédéric Moser & Philippe Schwinger Capitulation Project Click for English text Die Schweizer Künstler Frédéric Moser und Phillippe Schwinger stellen ihre neue filmische Arbeit "Capitulation Project", ergänzt durch Film- und Bühnenvorrichtungen, als raumgreifende Videoinstallation in der Galerie PLAY vor. Moser & Schwinger befragen unsere Gegenwart zu medialen Symbolen und Kriegesmetaphern. Ihre Arbeit bezieht sich auf das 1971 Konventionen sprengenden Stück "Commune" der Performance Group aus den USA: "Commune" bezog sich auf das Massaker von My Lai, eine der dokumentierten Gräueltaten des Vietnamkriegs. Moser & Schwinger entdecken in dieser historischen Performancevorlage die Dimension der Allegorie als Differenz zu den Bildern des modernen sauberen Krieges. Mit ihrem "Capitulation Project" nehmen sie dasjenige Fragment der historischen Performance auf, in dem das Miteinbeziehen des Publikums für die weitere Entwicklung des Stücks eine wesentliche Rolle spielte. Damals experimentierte "Performance Group" an 4 Variationen dieser Interaktion. Dreissig Jahre später kreieren Moser & Schwinger nun eine fünfte, zeitgemässe Variante. Für ihre Dreharbeiten rekonstruieren sie das Bühnenbild der damaligen Performance und Schauspieler übernehmen die Rolle der Performer, die als Reporter, Soldat und Unteroffizier das Statistenpublikum befragen. Nebst der Atmosphäre des durch die Befragung erhitzten Publikums und der Aufruhr durch die an verschiedenen Orten gleichzeitig stattfindenden Handlungen, nimmt der Film Bezug auf die vergangene Zeit und die Wiederholung derartiger Gräueltaten. Unabhängig von jeder Tagespolitik und jenseits der jüngeren amerikanischen Geschichte wird My Lai zu einem Topos, der die Menschheitsgeschichte von je her betrifft und betroffen macht. Das Fragment der Performance, welches aus fotografischen Dokumenten und historischen Berichten frei zusammengestellt wurde, wird so zur Filmthematik. Es entsteht eine Filmcollage, die Elemente der Performance wie auch der filmischen Umsetzung in einer von den Künstlern formulierten Sprache zusammenfasst. In der Präsentation in der Galerie PLAY erhält die durch den Film bewirkte Distanzierung zur Performance eine umfassende Bedeutung: der Raum wird neu in Relation gesetzt. Gegenüber der grossformatigen Filmprojektion wird die Wellenkonstruktion platziert, die im Film auch vom Publikum benutzt wird und nun für die Ausstellungsbesucher reserviert ist. So entsteht ein Spiegeleffekt. "Capitulation Project" wurde auf 16 mm mit direktem Ton aufgenommen und dauert etwa 15 Minuten. Mit freundlicher Unterstützung der Schweizer Botschaft. Moser & Schwinger aim at questioning our present condition according to symbols and metaphors in the media. "Capitulation Project" is based on "Commune", a play by the Performance Group, that in 1971 disrupted conventions in New York: "Commune" referred to the massacre of My Lai, one of the documented war crimes of the Vietnam war. Moser & Schwinger discover in this historic performance the allegory as difference to the images of the modern idea of a clean war. For "Capitulation Project" they chose a fragment of the historic performance, in which the active integration of the audience was essential for the further development of the situation. In 1971, Performance Group experimented with four variations of this interaction. Thirty years later, Moser & Schwinger have now created a fifth, contemporary, variation. For their film they reconstructed the scenery of the old performance and had actors take over the roles of the performers, who question the supernumerary audience in the role of a reporter, soldier and sergeant. "Capitulation Project" was filmed in 16 mm with live sound and lasts for about fifteen minutes. Beyond the atmosphere of an audience incited by the provocation of the performers, beyond the eruption of simultaneous action in several places, the film will take stock of the time that has passed, and of the repetition of such atrocities. Independently from daily politics and beyond the recent American History My Lai becomes a topos, which will always concern and paralyze mankind. The fragment of the performance is loosely based on photographic documents and reports, and now becomes also the subject of a film. A film collage emerges, using a new language developed by the artists, which combines elements of performance as well as film. In the presentation at PLAY gallery, the distance to the performance caused by the film will get an extensive meaning and a new spatial relation. Opposite to the large-format projection of the film will be the wooden wave which was used in the film shooting also by the audience.
