Sein photorealistisches Werk der achtziger und neunziger Jahre, gemalt und in riesige Holzplatten geschnitten, fanden unlängst in Ausstellungen in München, Hannover und New York erneut grosse Beachtung. Die Graphische Sammlung der ETH Zürich zeigt eine unbekannte Seite seines Schaffens, einen "Gertsch avant Gertsch". In den späten fünfziger und frühen sechziger Jahren breitete sich der abstrakte Expressionismus wie ein Flächenbrand über Mitteleuropa und Amerika aus. Der Künstler Franz Gertsch suchte einen Weg, diesem Hauptstrom aktueller Kunst nicht entgegen zu schwimmen, sein eigenes Profil als realistischer Maler zu behalten. Das gelang ihm dadurch, dass er auf drei Reisen zwischen 1961 und 1965 in Schottland Bildmotive und bestimmte Lichtverhältnisse fand, die es ihm erlaubten, in malerisch expressiver Manier zu aquarellieren. Diese frühen Aquarelle, die seinen späteren und auch den aktuellen Landschaften den Weg ebneten, werden erstmals umfassend ausgestellt und publiziert. His photo-realistic works, paintings of the seventies and wood-cuts of the eighties and nineties, recently received great recognition in exhibitions in Munich, Hannover and New York. The Collection of Prints & Drawings of the ETH Zurich shows a hitherto unknown side of the artist's productivity, a "Gertsch avant Gertsch", so to speak. In the late fifties and early sixties abstract expressionism spread like wildfire across central Europe and North America. The artist Franz Gertsch was seeking a way which would allow him not to swim against the stream of the prevailing art form and at the same time retain his profile as realistic painter. He succeeded in his pursuit on three trips to Scotland between 1961 and 1965 where he found pictorial motifs and conditions of light which inspired him to produce watercolours in an expressive manner. These early watercolours which led the way to Gertsch's later, including realistic landscapes, are for the first time exhibited and published in their entirety. May 12 - July 9, 2004 |
