Gabrielle Teschner
Everything You Think Is True

In a continuing effort to refresh and re-invigorate our exhibition program, Haines Gallery is introducing a new series of exhibitions dedicated to emerging artists. This innovative program will not only focus on emerging artists in the Bay Area but will reach to the far corners of the world to bring challenging and diverse art to San Francisco audiences. In addition to the gallery's selection of artists, we will also be asking guest curators to bring their visions to this ongoing exploration.

For the second exhibition of this series we will be exhibiting a San Francisco based artist in her final year at the California College of the Arts - Gabrielle Teschner. She presents a single body of work she has begun in the last year utilizing found maps. Each map has a word or phrase cut out of the central area that is either located somewhere on the map itself, such as the word "Ruins" cut out of a map of the West Indies; or a statement that begins "Here Lies...". For example, "Here Lies Iran" is cut out of a vintage map of West Virginia. The associations or disassociations for that matter are endless. Is the artist referring to energy consumption comparing coal to oil? Is it a conceptual demonstration of globalization? The endless experiences one can bring to the work is the beauty of these objects. The artist's title of the show, "Everything You Think Is True," could be a means of reassuring the viewer's response.
