 Food Design No. 28, 2004 Food Design Hendrikje Kühne und Beat Klein Click for English text Hendrikje Kühne und Beat Klein sind Sammler, Detektive und Künstler. In der Ausstellung "Food Design" zeigt das Künstlerpaar 93 Miniskulpturen aus auf Karton geklebten Abbildungen von Esswaren. Das Bildmaterial für die dreidimensionalen Collagen suchten sich die Sammler aus der Flut der Lebensmittelwerbung zusammen und bauten mittels eines Stecksystems räumliche Gebilde, die an fleischfressende Pflanzen oder Modelle atomarer Strukturen erinnern. Die Objekte sind skurril, grotesk und witzig. Da balanciert ein "La Vache qui rit" Käslein auf einem Hinterschinken, der sich auf einen schimmelnden Gorgonzola stützt, aus dem Maiskolben und Pfefferschoten wuchern. Dort bilden Kartoffeln und Selleriestangen das unstabil wirkende Fundament für eine Fruchttorte und eine ganze Kolonie von Pizzascheiben. Die biomorphen Kombinationen entsprechen kaum mehr den von den Lebensmittelabbildungen beabsichtigten Gelüsten. Die einzelnen Bausteine haben ihre Funktion als Repräsentanten von Nahrungsmitteln eingebüsst. "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" oder, im Kühne / Klein Schlaraffenalbtraumland: Kunst macht nicht dick. Auch den Konsumenten haben Hendrikje Kühne und Beat Klein analysiert. Die Handschriften auf achtlos weggeworfenen Einkaufszetteln von anonymen Supermarkt-Kunden wurden über das Internet graphologisch gedeutet und anschliessend statistisch ausgewertet. Essen Sie gerne und viel Tomaten? Dann neigen Sie vielleicht zur Schwermut. Hendrikje Kühne und Beat Klein stellten 2002 an der Baltic Triennial of International Art in Vilnius aus und präsentierten dieses Jahr im Kunstverein Hannover die 200 m2 grosse Bodeninstallation "A World of Difference". In their current show "Food Design" they present 93 mini-sculptures made from food reproductions glued on cardboard. The artist-collectors assembled the pictures for these 3-dimensional collages from the flood of food advertisements. Using a special technique, they created spatial constructions reminiscent of carnivorous plants and of models of atomic structures. The objects are grotesque, absurd and funny. A "La Vache qui rit" cheese balances on top of a piece of ham which itself rests on a moldy hunk of Gorgonzola. From the base corncobs and chiles proliferate. In another piece a fruit flan and a whole cohort of pizzas are placed on a very unstable foundation of potatoes and celery stalks. These biomorphic combinations hardly coincide with the desires originally intended by the food industry. The individual elements have lost their function as representatives of food. "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" or in the Cockaigne-nightmare-land of Kühne/Klein: art won't make you fat. In another piece, the artist-detectives go on to analyze the consumer. Via the internet, handwriting from several heedlessly thrown away shopping-lists of anonymous supermarket clients have been graphologically interpreted and statistically evaluated.
