Schroeder Romero is pleased to present "Branded", a solo exhibition of work by Heidi Schlatter. The exhibition features lightbox images of rural locations in Switzerland and New York State, which draw connections between the natural landscape, photography and advertising. The recognizable logos in these oxymoronic scenes of faked deaths and accidents contrast the pervasive cultural optimism of branding and product placement with a sense of dread and doom.

Continuing her use of imagery that emphasizes connections between economics, individuals and their built or natural environments, Schlatter appropriates the seductive nature of the lightbox format to address romantic ideals of natural beauty and its use in the marketing of specific products. Bodies in the woods or by the river's edge lie awkwardly still, marked with upbeat logos that suggest the promise of a bright, stable future.

Influenced by the natural settings which are often used as standard establishing shots in the opening sequences of films, as well as by traditional landscape painting and photography, these images satirize the illusion of the sense of confidence and caché that embracing brands are purported to provide. Referencing the notion of how every experience now has the potential to be visually "branded" - and how this can be internalized through TV and print ads, product insertions into films and peer marketing - Schlatter's lightboxes offer up a bleaker, more corrupted version of this script.

Heidi Schlatter's work has been exhibited in numerous venues in the U.S. and Europe, including PS 1, Momenta Art, and Wallspace Gallery in NYC, The Kunstbunker in Nurnberg, Germany, Kunstlerhaus Boswil & the Daros Collection in Switzerland. Her work is currently included in the exhibition "Out of Place", curated by Peter Scott, at the UBS Art Gallery in NYC.

Reuben Lorch-Miller: Untitled (Helicopters), 2004
Video still

In the Project Gallery, Schroeder Romero is pleased to present Reuben Lorch-Miller's "Helicopters". This projection is a digitally composed video and sound collage of a swarm of helicopters hovering in a clear blue sky. The entrancing image diverts the viewer's attention from the aircraft's use in war, law-enforcement and surveillance. The sound of the motors and spinning blades becomes a musical composition that can be at once soothing and abrasive. The piece is captivating and meditative which is in direct opposition to an image that is most often associated with oppression.

Reuben Lorch-Miller's work was included in the recent group exhibition "Terrorvision" at Exit Art, New York, and had a solo exhibition at Catherine Clark Gallery in San Francisco earlier this year. He lives and works in San Francisco.
