 Before Minus Now (Summer/ Spring) 2000 Picture: © Chris Moore Hussein Chalayan Fashion & Video Click for English text Das Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg präsentiert die erste grosse Soloausstellung des türkisch-zypriotischen Modeschöpfers Hussein Chalayan (geb. 1970 in Nikosia). In den vergangenen zehn Jahren hat Hussein Chalayan über zwanzig Kollektionen realisiert, von denen die wichtigsten in dieser Werkschau in Form von Kleidungsstücken, Installationen, Foto- und Videoarbeiten gezeigt werden. In Zusammenarbeit mit der NAI Verlagsgruppe wird zur Ausstellung die erste Monografie über Hussein Chalayans Werk herausgebracht; zusammen bilden sie den Rahmen seines zehnjährigen Jubiläums als Modedesigner. Hussein Chalayan gehört zu den innovativsten, höchst experimentell und konzeptuell arbeitenden Modeschöpfern unserer Zeit. Mit Inspirationen, die aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen wie Architektur, Philosophie und Anthropologie stammen, lässt sich sein Œuvre im Grenzgebiet zwischen Mode und moderner Kunst ansiedeln. Seine Themen sind häufig kulturell gesellschaftlich geprägt. Dies hat mit der persönlichen Geschichte Chalayans zu tun, der seine Identität verschiedenen Kulturen verdankt. Mit einer Aufsehen erregenden Abschlusspräsentation, für die er seine Kleidungsstücke zunächst für drei Wochen eingegraben hatte, beendete Hussein Chalayan sein Studium am renommierten Londoner Central St. Martins College of Art and Design. Der Einsatz von innovativen, ungebräuchlichen Materialien und unorthodoxen Techniken, in Verbindung mit dem konzeptuellen Reichtum seiner Präsentationen, brachten ihm bei den "British Fashion Awards" 1999 und 2000 den Titel "Designer of the Year" ein. Seit 2001 veranstaltet er seine Shows während der "Prêt à Porter" Modewochen in Paris. Im Jahre 2002 brachte er seine erste Herren-Kollektion heraus. Seitdem hat er weltweit an zahllosen Ausstellungen wie der "Radical Fashion" im Londoner Victoria & Albert Museum, "Fashion" im Kyoto Costume Institute in Japan, "Airmail Clothing" im Musée de la Mode Palais du Louvre in Paris und der Biennale in Istanbul teilgenommen. 2001/2002 war er "Artist in residence" am Wexner Center (State University of Ohio). Im April 2004 eröffnete Chalayan seinen ersten Flagship Store in Tokyo, in dem der Kunde die mediterrane Atmosphäre von Nord Zypern nachempfinden kann. In der im 2. Obergeschoss des Museums eingerichteten Ausstellung ist u.a. die spektakuläre Installation der Kollektion "Afterwords" (AW 2000-2001) zu sehen. Diese Installation verweist auf die Realität von Flüchtlingen. Hier werden Stuhlbezüge zu Kleidern transformiert, Stühle zu Koffern und ein Salontisch entpuppt sich als hölzerner Rock, der an Oskar Schlemmers "Triadisches Ballett" aus dem Jahr 1923 erinnert. "Ambimorphous" (AW 2002-2003), ein Projekt, das sich mit kultureller Veränderung auseinander setzt, liess sich in der (Mode-)Show als geografische und zeitliche Reise von einer Kultur zur anderen "lesen". Die Präsentation beginnt mit einem Modell, das ganz und gar in ein an eine Tracht erinnerndes Kostüm gehüllt ist, gefolgt von Modellen, deren Kleidung sich scheinbar "schrittweise" in ein modernes schwarzes Outfit verändert. Marcus Tomlinson, ein Videokünstler, mit dem Chalayan häufig zusammenarbeitet, hielt diese unterschiedlichen Outfits in einem Foto- und Videowerk fest. Auch die Videowerke "Place to Passage" (2004), das eine (innerliche) Reise von London nach Istanbul zum Thema hat, und "Anaestetics" (2004) - sein neuestes Werk - sind Bestandteile der ersten grossen Solopräsentation dieses besonderen Designers. Over the past ten years Hussein Chalayan has produced more than twenty collections, the most important of which are presented in this display in the form of garments, installations, photographs and videos. In collaboration with NAI Verlagsgruppe, the first monographic publication on the work of Hussein Chalayan has been issued to accompany the exhibition; together they celebrate his tenth anniversary as a fashion designer. Hussein Chalayan is one of the most innovative, experimental and conceptual fashion designers of the present day. He takes his inspiration from a wide range of different disciplines such as architecture, philosophy and anthropology, creating an oeuvre that is located at the interface between fashion and modern art. His work often revolves around cultural or socio-political themes, reflecting Chalayan's personal history as someone whose identity is shaped by different cultures. Hussein Chalayan graduated from the prestigious Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London with a sensational graduate presentation which involved burying the garments for three weeks before they went on show. His use of innovative, unconventional materials and unorthodox techniques, combined with the conceptual wealth of his presentation events, earned him the title of "Designer of the Year" at the "British Fashion Awards" two years running, in 1999 and 2000. Since 2001 he has presented his collections at the "prêt-à-porter" runway shows during Paris Fashion Week. In 2002 he launched his first menswear collection, and since then his work has been featured in numerous international exhibitions, including "Radical Fashion" at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, "Fashion" at the Kyoto Costume Institute in Japan, "Airmail Clothing" at the Musée de la Mode Palais du Louvre in Paris and the Istanbul Biennial. In 2001/2002 he was Artist in Residence at the Wexner Center (State University of Ohio). April 2004 saw the opening of his first flagship store in Tokyo, where customers are "transported" to the Mediterranean atmosphere of Northern Cyprus. Among the key works being shown in this exhibition on the second floor of the Kunstmuseum is the spectacular installation of the collection "Afterwords" (AW 2000-2001). This piece relates to the specific reality of refugees. Here, armchair covers are transformed into dresses, chairs become suitcases and a coffee table reveals itself to be a wooden skirt, reminiscent of Oskar Schlemmer's "Triadic Ballet" from 1923. "Ambimorphous" (AW 2002-2003), a project that deals with cultural change, can be "read" in this (fashion) show as a journey - both in a geografic and temporal sense - from one culture to another. The presentation opens with one model who is completely enveloped in something resembling a traditional costume, followed by others wearing clothes that seem to be transformed "piece by piece", ending with a modern black outfit. The various garments were captured in a photographic and video documentation by Marcus Tomlinson, a video artist with whom Chalayan has collaborated on many occasions. The video works "Place to Passage" (2004), on the theme of an - inner - journey from London to Istanbul, and "Anaestetics" (2004) - his most recent work - are also included in this first large-scale presentation of this exceptional designer's oeuvre.
