James Hyde

Brent Sikkema is pleased to present a selection of works by James Hyde from the last two years.

James Hyde, known for his eccentric variations of painting formats such as frescoes on Styrofoam, paint in glass boxes, pigment-slathered over-sized pillows and wall hangings fashioned from beach chair webbing, presents several new lines of work. Included in the exhibition will be painted and collaged over photographs - works that use the photographic print as painting support. These works emphasize the physical aspects of the photograph as well as the applied paint. They create the effect of moving abstract shapes out of the gallery interior and simultaneously cancel received habits of viewing photographic imagery.

Another group of works breaks with Hyde's twenty-five year commitment to abstraction. Composed of wood blocks - off-cuts of building timbers - arranged on clear vinyl or reflective chromed steel, these works represent such images as a tree, a halo, empty space and a paragraph. As part of the exhibition, Hyde will also present new fresco and beach chair webbing works.

As in past exhibitions, Hyde demonstrates his skill to explore the experience of vision and observation through works that are visually and imaginatively wide-ranging. Hyde continues his preoccupation with the material basis of painting. But in this exhibition, through his blunt contrasts of photographic, transparent or reflective supports with paint and object, material is seen as transparent and vision itself becomes physical.

James Hyde has shown at various institutions, including recent projects at the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, NC; the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York; the Contemporary Art Center Parc Saint-Leger, Pougues les Eaux, France, and a curated project in ZingMagazine, New York. Upcoming exhibitions will include "Pillow Talk" at Solvent Space in Richmond, Virginia from January to April, 2005.
