James Lecce

In his second exhibition at the gallery, Lecce's vibrant, biomorphic paintings have become more compositionally complex. Explosive forms couple with articulating elements that contrast in both color and scale.

Lecce's forms, which have always been inspired by nature, now veer toward the figurative and possess an almost anthropomorphized energy. These elements, combined with the paintings' enticingly glossy surfaces and saturated color, strike a delicate balance between organic, synthetic and ornamental sensibilities.

Additionally, the artist consciously strives to convey a sense of speed and fluid movement, and he cites the influence of music on his rhythmic, pulsating compositions. His multilayered paintings, created by pouring, scraping, shifting and injecting techniques, exhibit a flowing, alluring aura of pure plasticity that seems to simultaneously contain biology and refine it to a hyper-real level.
