James Turrell
The Light Within

Haines Gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition with world-renowned light installation artist James Turrell. This exclusive Bay Area exhibition is concurrent with the opening of a light work by the artist, entitled "Nada" (1976), at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

James Turrell: "The Light Within" will feature a full-scale light installation and a series of his rarely exhibited holographic works. This series of objects, originally developed over 10 years ago, do not utilize the traditionally pictorial aspect of the holographic medium. Instead, Turrell makes use of the medium's basic elements of light and space to create floating three-dimensional abstract forms within a two-dimensional frame. Much like Turrell's installations, such as "Afrum II" and "Beanie", these objects challenge the viewer with a perceptual conundrum that turns the viewer to thoughts of the very act of seeing itself. Turrell, who studied mathematics and perceptual psychology as an undergraduate, explains: "I like to use light as a material, but my medium is really perception. I want you to sense yourself sensing. To see yourself seeing. To be aware of how you are forming the reality you see." (Trachtman, James Turrell's Light Fantastic, Smithsonian, May 2003: 90.)

Turrell's major land art project that is akin to a modern day naked eye observatory is his most astonishing work to date. The Roden Crater is a natural cinder volcano located on the edge of the Painted Desert in Arizona. Utilizing the same strategies with light and space as his installation works, Turrell has reshaped the cinder cone of the crater and created various spaces in the interior, akin to his skyspaces, from which to view the celestial occurrences.

Turrell recently had a major retrospective at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh that successfully ran for an entire year. The Henry Art Gallery in Seattle has also just opened a new exhibition and permanent skyspace as part of their 75th anniversary celebration.
