Jean Prouvé / Charlotte Perriand
20th Century Architecture & Furniture

Gagosian Gallery and Galerie Patrick Seguin, Paris, are pleased to present an exhibition of furniture and architectural designs by Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) and Jean Prouvé (1901-1984).

Both Perriand and Prouvé made their design debuts in France during the 1920s. Perriand, a furniture and interior designer, became known for her sleek forms created with innovative materials such as copper and steel. From 1927 to 1937, Perriand worked with architects Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, an alliance that resulted in the development of their revolutionary tubular steel furniture. A skilled metalworker who later designed furniture and buildings, Prouvé opened his own metal workshop in 1923. His avant-garde architectural details garnered attention, and he soon began working with interior designers and architects, Le Corbusier among them.

In 1929 Perriand and Prouvé played a role in the establishment of the Union des Artistes Modernes, a collective advocating a modern aesthetic and the use of industrial technology. Beginning in 1950, Perriand, who had spent much of the wartime in Japan, and Prouvé, who had opened his own furniture factory in Nancy, France, began a fruitful period of work together. Both were known for their surprising uses of humble materials - plywood and corrugated metal, for example - and their abilities to create functional, refined furniture that also conformed to the requirements of large-scale production.

Their liaison resulted in many notable structures and spaces: As part of Perriand's design of the lounge and library for the Maison de l'Etudiant dormitory in Paris from 1950 to 1952, she and Prouvé developed a metal reading table with an integrated light fixture. Perriand's residential interior for the Air France building in Brazzaville, Congo (1950-1952), included the Brazza wood and steel storage unit designed in conjunction with Prouvé.

This marks the first large-scale exhibition in California to combine furniture and architectural elements (such as doors, shutters, and facade panels) created by these two iconic figures of twentieth-century design. For this very special event, original productions by Le Corbusier, Georges Jouve, Serge Mouille, Pierre Jeanneret, Alexandre Noll and Jean Royère will also be on display.
