Jeroen Kooijmans
New York is Eating Me & The Cactus Dance

James Nicholson Gallery is pleased to announce a site-specific installation using video, prints and sculptural elements by Dutch artist Jeroen Kooijmans.

The centerpiece of the installation consists of two films that become one trip. The main theme of the films is the artist's experience with a changed reality after the terrorist attacks of September 11th shortly after he moved to the U.S.

One film explores the artist's experience of watching the attacks on the Twin Towers occur in person from his apartment window in New York. The disaster had a profound personal impact on Kooijmans - his American dream suddenly became a nightmare. To clear his mind Kooijmans left New York and took a motorcycle trip from his native Amsterdam to Bombay, India. The second film looks at the adventures the artist had on his trip and his newfound ability to dream again.

By weaving these stories together the viewer experiences a mix between East and West, landscape and cityscape, Bible and Koran, home and nomad. It is a trip through unreal danger and absurd reality. Backwards or forward, identity has to be re-found.

Jeroen Kooijmans has exhibited extensively in Europe and the east coast. In 2002, Kooijmans participated in the prestigious International Studio Program at P.S. 1/MOMA in New York. This show marks his West Coast solo debut.
