Ewoldsen (Big Sur & J. Pfiefer Burns S.P.), 2004 Spore on black Art Spectrum paper, 18.5 x 26.5 inches Jim Toia Spore Known for the innovative use of organic materials in his work, artist Jim Toia presents a new series of mushroom spore drawings. Composed of mushroom spore on Art Spectrum black paper (whose toothy surface allows multiple overlays of colorful spore) the final rendering suggests a delicate chiaroscuro. Viewers are encompassed by an illusory three-dimensionality, as the forms appear to float in space - an experience akin to viewing holography. Created in Northern California in late 2004, Toia considers these works site-specific. The reference to location in the titles indicates both where the mushrooms were picked and where the drawings were made. While occasionally the site provides the impetus for the title often Toia will find that the resulting imagery is reminiscent of a particular form such as the jellyfish "Rhopilema Verrilli". Toia says of his process: "I seek to convey the absolute brilliance of circumstance and contingency. When successful, the viewer becomes aware of the fragility of the moment, realizes the miracle of our predicament, and bends to the fascination of pure experience." Jim Toia received his BA from Bard College and MFA from the School of Visual Arts. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe and is included in several collections including the Morris Museum in Morristown, NJ, the AT&T Collection, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Hunterdon Museum of Art in Clinton, NJ among others. He has been the recipient of New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship and a Geraldine Dodge Foundation Grant.
