 Johannes Maier Neurichten (News) Click for English text Die Berliner PLAY_gallery for still and motion pictures freut sich, die erste umfangreiche Einzelausstellung des in London lebenden Videokünstlers Johannes Maier zeigen zu können. Maier, der mit seinen Arbeiten bereits in zahlreichen internationalen Gruppenausstellungen und Videofestivals vertreten war, wurde im vergangenen Jahr mit dem Ersten Preis FAIR PLAY 2003 ausgezeichnet. Mit der Arbeit "ex.spectators" würdigte die Jury dabei vor allem seinen ebenso poetischen wie selbstreflexiven Umgang mit dem Medium Video. Die Auszeichnung FAIR PLAY 2003 gab dem Künstler die Möglichkeit, im Laufe dieses Jahres an verschiedenen Projekten zu arbeiten, die zur Ausstellungseröffnung erstmals der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt werden. Neben der ausgezeichneten Videoinstallation "ex.spectators" zeigt Maier zwei neue Arbeiten, die explizit für die Ausstellung entstanden sind. Ausgangspunkt beider Arbeiten ist das produktive Umfeld von Fernsehen und TV-Journalismus, insbesondere die darin wirksamen Mechanismen von Kontrolle und Autorschaft. So steht im Zentrum des Videos "Facing" eine Dokumentation des BBC-Kameramanns Darren Conway, der im letzten Irakkrieg als "eingebetteter" Journalist britische Soldaten begleitete. Conway berichtet darin über die aktuelle Situation seiner Einheit und über seine persönlichen Wahrnehmungen am Kriegsschauplatz. Im Jahr darauf konfrontierte Johannes Maier den Journalisten mit dessen Dokumentation. Die Videoarbeit, die dabei entstand, erzeugt eine ebenso dichte wie komplexe Konstellation zwischen Autor und Film, zwischen Aktualität und Erinnerung, zwischen medialer Authentizität und Inszenierung. Das Video "The Editor's Cut" wiederum wurde in einem BBC-Newsroom in London gedreht und geschnitten. Hauptakteure sind der Picture Editor Pete Millest und der Korrespondent Shaun Ley, beide Mitarbeiter der BBC. Wie in einer Art "close circuit"-Situation schneidet Millest einen Film, der zeitgleich gedreht wird, während Ley spontan einen unbedeutenden Kommentar liefert. Unfreiwillig und unvorgesehen verliert Johannes Maier zusehends die Kontrolle über das Ergebnis seiner eigenen Videoarbeit - bis zu dem Punkt, an dem er gewissermassen zum Opfer einer nichtautorisierten Postproduktion wird. Neben diesen neuen Werken erarbeitete Johannes Maier im Laufe dieses Jahres ein umfangreiches Künstlerbuch. Das Buch, das in der Reihe "book by" vom Verlag "Fine Arts Unternehmen Books" herausgegeben wird, dokumentiert nicht nur die bisherige Arbeit des Künstlers, sondern es erschliesst noch einmal - wenn auch in einem anderen Medium - jene selbstreflexive Arbeitsweise, die Maiers künstlerisches Werk so sehr auszeichnet. Die Buchpräsentation selbst werden Edgar Schmitz und Ralf Christofori moderieren, die als Autoren und Mitwirkende das Buchprojekt begleitet haben. Maier, who already took part in numerous international group exhibitions and video festivals, was last year awarded with the first prize of FAIR PLAY 2003. The jury acknowledged above all his poetic and at the same time self-reflective treatment of the medium video in his piece "ex.spectators". The FAIR PLAY 2003 award gave the artist the possibility to work on a variety of projects throughout the year, which will be presented for the first time in this exhibition. Apart from the award-winning video installation "ex.spectators", Maier will exhibit two new pieces, which were developed specifically for this show. Starting point for both works is the realm of television production and of TV journalism, in particular the mechanisms of control and authorship. Thus, a documentary by BBC cameraman Darren Conway, who accompanied British soldiers during the last Iraq war as an "embedded" journalist, stands at the centre of the video "Facing". In his film, Conway is reporting on the situation of his unit and on his own perceptions in the face of war. A year later, Johannes Maier confronted the journalist with his documentary. The resulting video piece, is the document of a very close and complex connection between the author and his film, between topicality and memory, between mediated authenticity and production. The video "The Editor's Cut" was filmed and cut in a BBC Newsroom in London. Protagonists are the picture editor Pete Millest and the correspondent Shaun Ley, both employees of the BBC. In a "close circuit" situation, Millest is cutting a film that is being filmed at the same time of the situation, while Ley supplies a spontaneous and insignificant life commentary. Involuntarily and unforeseen, Johannes Maier is visibly loosing control over the result of his own video work - up to the point, at which he turns to be a victim of non-authorized post production. Beside these new videos, Johannes Maier has in the past year been working on an extensive artist book. The book that is published by "Fine Arts Unternehmen Books" in their series "book by" does not only document the artist's past works, but gives another viewpoint on the self reflective working method that is so distinctive in Maier's work - albeit in another medium. The book launch will be presented by Edgar Schmitz and Ralf Christofori, who have accompanied this publishing project both as authors and participants.
