John Bisbee

Plane Space is thrilled to present new work by sculptor John Bisbee. Accompanying Bisbee's third solo exhibition at Plane Space will be the gallery's first catalogue, "John Bisbee: Ten Tons", surveying the one-ton sculptures that the artist has made to date.

Similar to his previous exhibitions at the gallery, Bisbee will present one-ton pieces comprised of 12-inch spikes; however, these two new works deviate from their predecessors in that they are not welded together, rather their components are meticulously stacked. In addition, Bisbee has created two smaller autonomous pieces consisting exclusively of weld. The combination of these sculptures presents a separation of materials that has been a part of Bisbee's work for the last 18 years. In that tradition, Bisbee has also created a large wall piece, fusing the 12-inch spike together by means of weld.

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Bisbee received his B.F.A. from Alfred University in western New York. He currently lives and works in Maine where he teaches sculpture at Bowdoin College. His solo museum exhibitions include the Albright-Knox Museum in Buffalo, New York, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Portland, Maine. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout the country. Among his awards, Bisbee received the 2003 Rappaport Prize, the largest individual grant for a New England artist, administered by the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park. Bisbee's work has been reviewed in Art in America, ARTnews, and Sculpture Magazine, and featured in The New Yorker, The New York Times and The Boston Globe.
