John Miller
The New Honeymooners

Friedrich Petzel Gallery is pleased to announce "The New Honeymooners", an installation of new works by John Miller.

John Miller underscores the decadence and hollow promise of our present "gilded age" by replacing his signature excremental brown impasto with glimmering gold leaf. In this new series of works, Miller is using gold leaf to gild actual junk in his wall reliefs and standing sculptures for his exhibition "The New Honeymooners" presented in two parts at Friedrich Petzel Gallery and Metro Pictures (519 West 24th Street).

At Friedrich Petzel Gallery, Miller installs a group of wall reliefs alongside a circular rug. The reliefs made from vernacular materials, trash and plastic objects piled upon wood panels have been painstakingly covered with gold leaf. Each of the objects simultaneously reference both debasement and decadence. To emphasis this, Miller pulled the reliefs' titles from TV soaps and minimalist art criticism. In Metro Pictures' second floor gallery, Miller presents a group of gilded tabletop sculptures beside a wall papered in a brown and gold geometric design.

John Miller lives and works in Berlin and New York where he teaches at Columbia University. He has regularly exhibited at Metro Pictures since 1984. One-person shows include the Center of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; Kunstverien, Hamburg; DAAD Galerie, Berlin; PS1 New York; and Magasin-Centre National d'Art Contemporain, Grenoble, France. His work was included in the Whitney Biennials in 1985 and 1991.
