John Newsom
Black Widow Paintings

Mike Weiss Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by New York artist John Newsom, entitled "Black Widow Paintings".

Created over the span of the last two years, John Newsom depicts naturalistic scenes that serve as allegories for the human realm. The black widow injects an instant anxiety, echoing connections within the post-9/11 landscape. The black widows play out dramas of loss, renewal, fear, doubt, and love among a wide range of poisonous flora and fauna, including reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, and various other wildlife.

Newsom defines a uniquely individual vocabulary, cross-referencing painting styles and motifs. His exuberant brushstrokes create new vantage points for the interpretation of surface and image. A highly charged, bright, and optimistic palette offsets the darkness surrounding the creatures within the fierce narratives depicted on the canvases.

On the occasion of John Newsom's first show at Mike Weiss Gallery, Mike Weiss Editions has published Newsom's first full color catalog, with an essay by Martha Schwendener. John Newsom was recently featured on the cover of Art & Auction. His recent solo shows include Stefan Stux Gallery in New York, Leyendecker Gallery in Tenerife Spain, and New Gallery/Thom Andriola in Houston Texas.
