John Parks
English Landscapes as Finger Painting

The exhibition will feature paintings of archetypal British scenes: gardens, landscapes, foxhunting, polo, tennis, and - the most British of all hobbies - train spotting.

An expatriate Englishman, Parks is motivated by homesickness, not only for England, but also for his childhood and the images that stirred his young imagination. For that reason, he chose to adopt a children's painting method and execute his tactile, impastoed works as finger painting. For Parks, the effort to pin down an image with this imprecise method is equivalent to the effort of trying to remember something that is long past. The results are a joyous mixture of whimsy and nostalgia conveyed in rich and lively paint surfaces.

John Parks was born in Leeds, England in 1952. He began painting landscapes when he was at the Royal College of Art in London, England. Parks' early work showed an acute photo-realistic influence. He moved to New York City in 1976, and has been showing with the Allan Stone Gallery since 1977. Parks has been a member of the faculty of the School of Visual Arts in New York since 1979. In addition to showing widely as a painter since the late seventies, he has published many articles on art and travel.
