 Table cloth , 2003 Digital Scan and Oil on linen, 200 x 150 cm John Young Three Propositions Click for English text In seinen Arbeiten kombiniert John Young die Techniken Malerei auf Leinwand mit grossformatigen Digital-Prints vorgefundener Bilder. Er multipliziert und fragmentiert Bilder und Informationen, paart Abstraktion mit Fotorealismus, führt westliche und ostasiatische Bildvorlagen zusammen, um sie wieder zu trennen. Als in Hong Kong geborener und aufgewachsener Chinese und als in Australien lebender Künstler reflektiert er die "Zwischen"- Welten von Migranten und verweigert die in Australien, wie auch Europa geforderte Assimilation. Ausgehend von diesem Kontext sind die jüngsten Arbeiten des Malers, von ihm gewollt, auch als ein Kommentar zu den Auffassungen der westlichen Kuratoren-Szene zu sehen. Denn diese ist es, die nach Assimilation ebenso wie nach "asiatisch – chinesischer Authenzität" verlangt. John Youngs Werk weigert sich, nur eine Sache, auf eine Weise, von einem Künstler zu sein. Young: "Seit Benjamin ist eine Funktion des Malaktes, ein Gefühl der Zuneigung für das Motiv wiederzuerwecken – buchstäblich auf es einzuwirken. Das Malen ist die Vereinigung des Körpers mit dem Bild, und eine fotografische Abbildung zu malen – das heisst, ein Bild, das sozusagen aus dem Strom der Zeit heraus festgefroren ist – ist für mich eine Art der Reinkarnation. ... Der Expressionismus war noch nie meine Sache – für mich ging es beim Malen eines Bildes immer um das Verhältnis des Körpers zur Oberfläche, nicht um ein Urheberschaftsverhältnis". John Young wurde 1956 in Hong Kong geboren und emigrierte 1967 nach Australien. Nach dem Studium der Philosophie studierte er Malerei und Plastik am Sydney College of the Arts. He multiplies and fragments images and information, he mates abstraction with photorealism, conflates Western and East-Asian submittals to seperate them again. As a Chinese, born and grown up in Hong Kong, and an Australian based artist today, he reflects 'between' worlds of migrants and denies the assimilation which is postulated in Autralia as well as in Europe. Based on this context the new works of the painter can be seen as a comment on the Western curatorial-scene. Those are requiring assimilation likewise an 'Asian- Chinese authenticity'. John Youngs work declines to be one thing, in one way, of one artist. He states: 'since Benjamin one function of the act of painting is to resuscitate a sense of affection for the image - to literally affect it. Painting is the body’s union with the image, and to paint a photographic image - that is an image which is, so to speak, frozen dead out of the stream of time, is, to me, a sort of reincarnation. Regarding ‘thinness’ I have never gotten to a point in the belief of authorship that the mark is the mark of the author. Expressionism has never been my cup of tea - painting an image for me has always been the body’s relation to the surface, not an author’s relation.' John Young was born 1956 in Hong Kong and emigrated 1967 to Australia. After his studies of Philosophy he mayored in painting and sculpture at the Sydney College of the Arts.
