We swam amongst the fishes. 2003 Julian Opie We swam amongst the fishes In a recent group of works, Julian Opie has transformed his personal experience as a tourist in Bali into a series of generalized portraits, landscapes, and underwater seascapes that evoke a sense of idealized beauty and leisure through his signature style of simplified forms and shapes. For his café project, Opie will create a virtual underwater oasis of black vinyl cut-outs of swimmers and fish affixed onto the wall and windows, transforming the room into a playful environment full of movement, and emphasizing the presence of Lake Michigan only blocks away. The scenes are taken from photographs of his daughter, Elena, swimming in Bali. This will be Opies second solo exhibition in the United States. This exhibition is curated by Curatorial Assistant Julie Rodrigues Widholm. Support has been generously provided by Donna and Howard Stone.
